If you’re a Gran Turismo fan, we’re sure the most memorable signboard in previous video game installations was the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) model. After all, this game was developed and published by a Japanese company plus it came out in the 90s when the JDM nameplate was popular in the car and motorsports scene.
Carwow wanted to capture that nostalgia through a drag race, which featured seven of the leading nameplates in Gran Turismo 2 video games. There are some important omissions, but we’ll get to that later.
In its early grip, the Honda NSX was the only mid-engined competitor, with a rear-seat 3.0-liter V6 producing 275 horsepower (205 kilowatts) and 210 pound-feet (285 Newton-meters) of torque.
To the side is the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 V-Spec that makes 280 hp (209 kW) and 289 lb-ft (392 Nm) of torque from the turbocharged 2.6-liter inline-six. Next door is the Mazda RX-7 Type RS with a twin-turbo 1.3-liter rotary engine that also puts out 280 hp but produces less torque at 232 lb-ft (314 Nm).
Meanwhile, another Nissan is joining the ranks and that is the Silvia S15. With a 2.0-liter four-pot turbo, it produces 250 horses (186 kW) and 203 lb-ft (275 Nm). Then there’s the A80 Toyota Supra and the 3.0-liter inline-six coupled with twin turbos, producing 285 hp (213 kW) and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm) of torque. Next to it is another Toyota with a JZ engine, albeit a 1JZ, a Chaser. The twin-turbo 2.5-liter inline-six engine produces 280 hp and 268 lb-ft (363 Nm) of torque.
Lastly, the last of the seven is the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition, which also makes 280 hp and 275 lb-ft (373 Nm) of traction.
All cars that attended this JDM Legends meeting came with manual transmission. The Toyota Supra A80 is the most powerful, but slightly heavier behind the Skyline GT-R. While the Mazda RX-7 is the lightest, even lighter than the Evo VI and NSX. Only the Skyline GT-R and Evo VI run on all fours for this drag race.
The Honda Civic Type R and Subaru Impreza WRX are two notable omissions, but we’re not complaining. However, before watching the race, which of these cars do you think is the fastest and fastest on the straight? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
