The Mitsubishi Outlander received a major overhaul for the fourth generation of the SUV. The entire model lineup underwent a redesign, including the plug-in hybrid variant. Mitsubishi will begin sales of the Outlander PHEV in select US markets this November, and will cost $39,845 upon arrival, excluding location-dependent destination fees.
Cars bound for Hawaii and Alaska will receive a destination fee of $1,470, while cars destined for the continental US will be slightly cheaper at a cost of $1,345. This brings the Outlander PHEV’s starting price to $41,315 and $41,190 respectively.

The Outlander PHEV debuted with a range of 54 miles (87 kilometers), Mitsubishi reaching that figure on a forgiving European test cycle. This SUV will again cover a distance of 38 miles (61 km) in the US. The automaker claims that the SUV can offer a driving range of up to 420 miles (674 km) on a single fuel tank and on a single charge.
The Outlander PHEV packs a 2.4-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine and two electric motors. The combined output is 248 horsepower (184 kilowatts) and 332 pound-feet (450 Newton-meters) of torque. The previous Outlander PHEV produced 221 hp (165 kW). The new SUV has a 350-volt, 20-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, with a 40 percent increase in range over the previous model. DC fast charging can recharge the SUV to 80 percent in about 38 minutes.
This SUV also comes with a larger 14.8 gallon fuel tank and Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system. The engine and one electric motor drive the front wheels while only the electric motor spins the rear wheels. The Outlander PHEV will also have Mitsubishi’s Active Yaw Control.
Entry-level, non-PHEV 2022 Outlander starts at $26,995 (excluding destination fees). While hybrids are much more expensive, Mitsubishi says customers have been ordering the model at dealerships for months. “We can’t wait to start delivering that excitement,” said Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, who calls the model the “peak” of the automaker’s engineering.
The Outlander PHEV wears the same styling as the non-plug-in model, which carries over to the interior. The styled cabin of this model is the same as the other variants, except for the hybrid-only display readout. Sales of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will begin nationwide once it goes on sale in select markets this November.
