Renault Says Alpine Could Come To The United States With Two Bigger EVs

If you missed that memo, Alpine will turn into a pure electric car maker in the years to come. As shown in the teaser image above, the performance sub-brand Renault has announced three EVs as part of the “Dream Garage.” France will start with a hot hatch derivative of the reborn Renault 5 in 2025. This will soon be followed by a swoopy crossover and sports car to indirectly replace the mid-engined A110.

The news here is that two additional larger models are in the works for release in the second half of the decade. Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo told European Automotive News a mid-sized sports vehicle is slated to hit the market in 2027 and will be followed a year later by a larger SUV. He went on to say it will sit on a platform developed within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance or by a “leading EV player.”

Keep in mind that parent company Renault has teamed up with Geely to create a new 50:50 joint venture that will employ 19,000 people to develop and build a combustion engine and hybrid powertrain. The Chinese auto conglomerate also has EV expertise as it owns Volvo and Polestar. Also important to point out is that the electric sports car we mentioned earlier will be co-developed with Geely’s Lotus.

These two larger vehicles will be key to Alpine’s global expansion. The company’s exposure has increased outside Europe since 2021 when the Renault factory team in Formula 1 was renamed Alpine. With the F1 becoming more popular in the United States, thanks in part to Netflix’s “Drive to Survive,” Luca de Meo believes a pair of larger EVs will make sense in North America.

Potential entry into China is also being considered as Alpine targets 15 percent of its annual shipments to come from outside Europe by the end of the decade. Renault Group executives say sales outside the Old Continent could eventually make up 50 percent of the total.
