Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class Coupe Spying the Nurburgring

Posted on

The Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe will occupy a place in the current lineup of the German automaker for the two-door versions of the C-Class and E-Class. This spy shot captures the upcoming sporty model fawning over the Nürburgring.

The CLE has an oval-shaped grille with slim headlights with angled angles on each side of the vehicle’s face. Camouflage hides specific details, but there appears to be a narrow gap in the lower fascia.

The vehicle has a slim profile with a curved roofline and a very short rear deck. There is a sharp crease running diagonally upwards on the back door.

From the back, you can see the CLE has a proper trunk, not a hatchback. The taillights consist of an arc that points downwards. The rear bumper hides the exhaust pipe.

The CLE-Class uses the MRA-2 platform which is also under the new C-Class. This means the two models can share a powertrain. The offering could even include the electric-powered 2.0-liter turbocharged engine used in the new AMG C63. Early indications showed the plant provided a total output of 670 horsepower (500 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters) of torque.

We don’t have images in the CLE-Class yet. The relationship with the C-Class means that the coupe may borrow technology from the new sedan. This means a large screen for the instruments and infotainment system.

In addition to this hardtop coupe, previous spy shots show a convertible variant of the CLE-Class in development. It replaces the droptop versions of the C- and E-Class. A rumor from 2020 suggested a possible firebrake version, but we haven’t seen a spy shot of it yet.

Mercedes has not said when the CLE-Class will debut. The best guess right now is that the launch should take place before the end of 2022. Then, the model goes on sale in the first half of 2023. From there, additional variants like the AMG model will slowly join in.
