the subgenre Speed Champions, within the huge family of LEGO themes, is one of my favorites. They were born as affordable children’s oriented sets with licensed cars, but they have soon become true collector’s items and are devoured by the brand’s adult fans – I feel guilty, I admit it. The Speed Champions saga has been expanded this 2022 with two sets under cinematographic license – James Bond and “Ado Gas” – and in January, a third set will arrive, also based on the cinematic universe of “Ado Gas”.
The set in question is based on one of the greatest automotive icons in the movie saga. We’re not talking about the Toyota Supra from the first movie, but we’re talking of the fantastic Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 that Brian O’Conner drove in “2 Fast 2 Furious”. That car appeared mainly at the beginning of the film, before Brian went on to drive a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII. It was silver, had striking blue vinyl, and is remembered as one of the most characteristic cars in the saga.
It will go on sale in January, and will cost 24.99 euros. Will it arrive in time for the Three Kings?
As is usual in the latest releases of the Speed Champions saga, the car is recreated with great detail, something to take into account knowing that the set is small, cheap, and only has 319 pieces. LEGO designers have to rack their brains to achieve realism on this scale, and often do so with highly innovative building techniques that push what was thought possible by combining these small plastic parts together.
The car has a very boxy look and of course, as well as having a gigantic rear wing, the steering wheel is on the right. In its passenger compartment there is a large nitrous oxide cylinder – it could not be otherwise – and it boasts a new model of wheels, which replicates the chrome wheels of the Skyline from the movie. I am also struck by the use of licensed Toyo Tires stickers or the detail of the Florida license plate. That taste for details It is one of the most appreciated strengths by fans of LEGO Speed Champions.
The set will go on sale in January., according to the information present in several blogs and in the video published by Racing Brick, where he also analyzes the design and its construction techniques together with the LEGO designer who created it. The set will cost – almost certainly – 24.99 eurosbeing identical in positioning to Toretto’s Dodge Charger and James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 sets.
