The competition was first held in 1964 when it was won by Rover’s groundbreaking 2000, but with the exception of cars like the Rover 3500 (1977), Porsche 928 (1978) and Citroen XM (1990), the European judges mindful of costs have favored affordable conventional vehicles. However, this is not the first time that an electrician has received the ECOTY gong. The nissan leaf (2011), Jaguar I-Pace (2019) and Kia EV6 (2022) have been ahead of combustion cars in the last twelve years.

The jury of professional motoring journalists is usually a 61-member panel from across the continent, but on this occasion, four Russian judges were forced to sit out in response to their country’s invasion of Ukraine. Each of the judges has 25 points to distribute, which must be distributed among at least five cars and not give more than 10 points to any vehicle.

The Avenger is based on the same Stellantis platform as the 2008 Peugeot and Opel Mokka, and is currently available as an EV, though a 1.2-liter three-cylinder ICE version will be added. But being designed specifically with Europe in mind, the 160.5-inch (4076mm) small SUV won’t make it to the US.
