Garage 54, a YouTube channel known for its unconventional car experiments – mostly on old Ladas – recently took on a new challenge: making a transparent distributor cap. This is the latest in a series of experiments in which our favorite Russian “scientist” tries to make car parts transparent in the name of science.
The group, made up of automotive enthusiasts who like to push the boundaries of what is possible with cars, wanted to see if it was possible to make a clear distributor cap that would allow people to see inside their engine while it was running. .
The experiment starts with people on Garage 54 disassemble the standard distributor cap and carefully remove all internal components. They then took a clear plastic material and shaped it into the same shape as the original distributor cap. They reassembled all of the internal components into the clear covers and then attached them to the testing machine.
When the engine starts, the clear distributor cap comes to life, with the rotating rotor and the high-voltage spark clearly visible through the transparent material. The group was amazed by what they saw, by the way the inside of the machine seemed to dance and pulse with each power-up cycle.
Strange though it may be, the experiment was a success. The clear distributor cap works just as well as the standard cap. You can watch the experiment via the embedded video on this page. It must have piqued people’s interest as the video has amassed over 67,000 views as of this writing.
While the clear distributor cap may not have practical applications for everyday driving, it provides a unique and visually stunning way for people to see the inside of their engine.
