Often when it comes to drag racing, power and weight are the main considerations. If the lighter, more powerful car faces a heavier and less powerful competitor, it’s almost always the first to win.
That’s not always the case, of course. Take this fight, for example, courtesy of YouTube Official Gas. What we see is a drag race slugfest between tuned 90s legends: the Toyota Supra A80 and the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34.
But like most cars that still exist today, they were tuned and modified by their owners. The Toyota Supra A80 here comes with a few modifications inside and outside the hood, including a carbon fiber section. With one turbo assisting the rebuilt 2JZ engine, the Supra produces 850 horsepower (634 kilowatts) and weighs 3,086 pounds (1,400 kilograms).
The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34, on the other hand, received similar modifications but was slightly underpowered at 672 hp (501 kW) and quite heavier at 3,351 lbs (1,520 kg).
But that’s not the end of the story. As you know, the Skyline GT-R sends power to all four wheels, while the Supra is a rear-wheel drive coupe. Nissan also uses semi-slippery Toyo R888R road tires compared to Toyota’s Pirelli P-Zero road rubber. Both cars are also equipped with a manual gearbox.
There are two types of drag races shown in the video: one from a roll while the other from a standing start. The A80 Supra won the first round after a decider which ended with a photo finish. However, with the superiority of AWD traction and the impeccable skill of the Skyline GT-R driver, Nissan completely crushes Toyota when it comes to digging – and that’s despite the Supra’s immense power and weight advantages.
