Alfa Romeo welcomes 2023… with the first hint of its new sports car?

Alfa Romeo has welcomed 2023 by publishing a video on its social networks in which not only its current products stand out: in the last bars of the recording it appears a message and an unprecedented light signature. A track in which many have seen the starting point for one of the innovations that the brand has promised: a sports car that, yes, will have nothing to do with the Zagato one that we met last year.

Alfa Romeo video welcomes 2023, assuring that it will be an “emotional, lively and charming” year. It begins with images of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, as well as the recently refreshed Alfa Romeo Giulia and Alfa Romeo Stelvio asking if we are ready for the new year.

However, the most important part is the ending. The rear light of an unknown model appears with a phrase that answers the question they have just asked: “We are (ready)” (“We are ready”). The light signature draws a ‘6’ and a ‘C’ together: a design that is currently not offered on any of the three products sold by the Italian brand.

That simple image has reignited the rumors about the possible return of an adapted Alfa Romeo 6C, that yes, to our days. It should be remembered that this name was used by the brand in some of the road, racing and sports models that it manufactured between 1925 and 1954. It would also be an arrival received by many with open arms after the disappearance of the Alfa Romeo 8C. and 4C.

The truth is that the image of that enigmatic lighthouse does not include real information about a hypothetical new sports car. The year that we have just closed saw the arrival of the Alfa Romeo Tonale as well as the update of the Giulia and Stelvio: 2023 should be more interesting. That is what emerges from the statements that, in recent months, have been made by the heavyweights of the manufacturer.

Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo, he spoke freely about a sports car inspired by iconic models from the brand’s past: he even added that in March 2023 they would make a revelation (we don’t know if it was partial or total). Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Head of Design, backed up those statements and the rumors by saying that there would be a surprise announcement soon.

In those bets on that hypothetical Alfa Romeo sports car, a theory that suggests what its mechanical scheme could be like stands out: an improved and more powerful version of the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, which in the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA delivered 540 horsepower and had a maximum torque of 600 Nm. If so, it would be interesting to see if the engineers manage to increase those numbers.

They also bet that there are high probabilities that this is the latest model with a combustion engine Alfa Romeo before the brand goes electric by 2027. We’ll see if all these theories are true in the coming months.
