It costs like a Toyota Corolla, but it is an electric family car with 400 km of autonomy

Right now, the smartest purchase is a hybrid car. Neither diesel nor gasoline, a non-plug-in hybrid. In the hybrid segment, one of the most recommended is the incombustible Toyota Corolla, available with a practical and very wide family body. However, electric mobility is also interesting, and it is for more and more people. In this article we want to introduce you one of the few electric family members on the market. A car with 400 km of autonomy whose price is equal to that of a hybrid Toyota Corolla.

The car in question is the MG5. It is the older brother of the MG4, and is only available with a family body “of a lifetime.” It measures 4.60 metersIt has five doors and a trunk more than decent 479 liters of volume. It is available with two battery sizes: 50.3 kWh and 61.1 kWh, with the latter having nickel-manganese-cobalt (NiMh) batteries, versus the smaller battery’s LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry. Interestingly, the small battery version has 177 hp, compared to the 156 hp of the motor associated with the largest battery.

If you want another 100% electric family member, you will have to wait for the Opel Astra-e… or opt for a Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo.

This article is focused on the large battery version, whose WLTP autonomy is 400 km exact. The small battery version has a range of 320 km, and when push comes to shove, it will be much more limited to urban environments. From the extended autonomy version we can expect between 250 and 300 km of realistic autonomy, in addition to more than correct features: 0 to 100 km/h happens in 8.3 seconds, we have 280 Nm of torque and 185 km/h of top speed. Its maximum load power is 80 kW in direct current, and 11 kW in three-phase alternating current.

The design of the car has been extensively updated this year, as well as the cockpit, which features semi-digital instrumentation with a 7″ screen and a MG iSmart Lite 10.25″ infotainment system similar to the MG4 – compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Even in the Access Comfort version we have heated seats, manual climate control, alloy wheels or the MG Pilot system, with adaptive cruise controlwarning of involuntary change of lane or reversing camera.

MG offers a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty for the MG5, like that of other cars of the brand.

Its equipment is very complete and its price, at the moment, is 24,080 euros for the standard autonomy version, and 27,280 euros for the version we are analyzing. Now, to access this price, several things have to happen. The first is that we have to take advantage of the MOVES III Plan with scrap, in addition to financing the purchase of the vehicle with Santander Promo-Finance. At this time, MG advances the amount of the MOVES Plan (it is a zero interest loan, technically) but it is our responsibility to request it.

The financing conditions are not detailed on the web, and must be communicated by the commercial network of the brand. In addition, the price is only valid for units in stock, which do not include the Type 2 charging cable or any accessory. At the moment of truth, its price is higher than the 27,280 euros announced, but It has no rival in price in the electric family segment and its cost is comparable to that of its hybrid rival. Therefore, we dare to classify it as one of those bargains of which there are frankly few.

Finally, don’t forget that This offer is only valid until the end of the yearwhen there will foreseeably be a price increase.
