Mazda MX-30 with rotary engine debuts on January 13 at the Brussels Motor Show

Mazda will present the MX-30 with Wankel engine as range extender the next January 13th in it Brussels Motor Show. It is a rotating block and will begin to be available on the Old Continent in spring.

Surely the details about the engine displacement and mechanical specifications will be reported at the time of launch. Mazda had commented that the rotary runs at a constant speed to serve as a range extender to recharge the battery while on the move. The Japanese brand sees this as a combination of the benefits of an EV with the range capability of a combustion car.

The current MX-30 has a shortcoming, since the battery of 35.5 kWh offers autonomy 100 miles according to the EPA. The rotary engine will improve that figure in exchange for a little more weight.

The electric motor of the Mazda MX-30 generates 144 HP Y 200 foot-pounds. These figures allow reaching 60 miles in 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 87mph.

This configuration would only reach the European market for now, although in 2021, Mazda’s head of North American operation announced that no version with wankel would arrive in the US, but did not say when.

In the United States, Mazda limited the MX-30 EV to just 505 units and sold them only in California, so it is not clear if the 2023 version would reach this country.

The last Wankel-powered car available was the RX-8 and it was retired in 2012.
