Those of you who have been following us for a long time will know that at Diariomotor we declare ourselves absolute fans of everything related to LEGO, especially if it has to do with motorized vehicles. In recent years, one of the collections that has most stolen our hearts from petrolheads has been Speed Champions. Looking ahead to March 2023, LEGO has just presented four new sets, joining the just-introduced Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 from 2 Fast 2 Furious. These four new sets include cars as mythical as the McLaren F1, or novelties such as the Pagani Utopia.
The new Speed Champions of 2023 are three single sets and one double set. In 2022 they released two double sets and three single sets, with an additional two releases of movie-inspired single sets in the summer. So far in 2023, the set inspired by 2 Fast 2 Furious and these four additional sets have been presented. The first set is a solo model of the hyperbolic Ferrari 812 Competizione. A set recreated with great detail, and that represents the most powerful and extreme traditional Ferrari ever created.
The individual sets are around 300 pieces and will be priced at 24.99 euros.
I like the way its aerodynamic solutions have been recreated, as well as the use of painted parts for the tail lights, and a new transparent cockpit with painted details – as opposed to the excessive use of stickers. The following set corresponds to the Pagani Utopia, and marks the first time that the Italian brand appears in the LEGO universe. The Utopia is their latest release and is faithfully represented with an eight block wide chassis. The use of printed parts for the glazed surface and the exhaust is noteworthy.
However, I would have preferred that the exhaust, a truly characteristic detail of the brand, had been built with blocks. The third and final individual set is the Porsche 963, from the LMH category of the World Endurance Championship. This racing car benefits really well from the new flat eight block chassis, and it’s especially apparent from the nature of the car. The aerodynamics, the color scheme or the fine optics are present, as well as a new single-seater cockpit of new invoice – longer than that of the old Speed Champions.
The double set will cost 44.99 euros. Their prices are very reasonable and they take up little space.
Finally, we have a double set, licensed by McLaren. The star of the set is the iconic McLaren F1 LM, painted in orange and tastefully recreated. Its shapes are fantastically adapted to LEGO blocks, and it becomes, together with the Lamborghini Countach, one of the most desired classics, from my point of view. Also included in the set is the McLaren Solus GT, a newly released client racing – which is, in my opinion, the least attractive of all and the price to pay to get the double set with the McLaren F1.
They go on sale on March 1, 2023.
