Ford introduced the seventh-generation Mustang yesterday, giving the iconic pony car a new design inside and out. The automaker made other improvements to the car outside of its style, such as introducing the new Dark Horse performance variant. But the official Blue Oval sketch depicts at least one interesting alternative design for the car – a sleek four-door sedan.
The sketch is from Christopher Stevens Ford, the company’s senior exterior designer. The image with the sedan only has one illustration of the car – a profile view that is clearly visible from the rear door. The sedan retains its iconic coupe-like shape, with the greenhouse fastback style flowing down to the short, two-door rear deck. The two-tone top helps hide the length, but the door handles on the back of the fender are hard to miss.
The existence of the Mustang Mach-E makes it seem as though a four-door Mustang sedan is possible, but building such a car to keep consumers loving their crossover seems impossible. The single sketch sits among other interesting Mustang designs, with two images depicting the coupe with a C-shaped motif like Bugatti around the doors.
The Mustang that Ford introduced yesterday has only two doors, with bold new styling at the front and rear. Powering the redesigned Mustang will be the “all-new” 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine and a revamped 5.0-liter V8, which comes with twin air boxes and two throttle bodies.
Ford decided that the only gearbox that would be available for the four-cylinder would be an automatic transmission, while those looking to paddle the gear themselves should upgrade to a V8-powered GT which was available with both options. The manual makes over 40 percent of the GT’s ales.
The redesigned Ford Mustang 2024 will go on sale next summer, and we’re excited to see the variant produced during its life cycle. Ford set the bar high by unveiling the new Dark Horse trim straight out of the gate, which can produce around 500 horsepower (373 kilowatts) when it arrives. However, Ford has yet to announce output figures for the new Mustang model. Expect Ford to disclose the car’s performance figures and pricing information closer to the car’s 2023 sales date.
