We recognize that trucks have their appeal, and as motoring enthusiasts, we are curious and amazed. However, your purchase is not a passion purchase, but a purchase with a purely functional goal in mind. It is the definition of rational purchase. Therefore, both its marketing and advertising are very different from those of the cars we know. And yet, almost 10 years ago, Volvo Trucks broke schemes with a series of highly original advertising campaigns. And among all his ads, one especially stood out.
that ad it was called “The Epic Split”, and was designed and executed by the Swedish agency Forsman & Bodenfors. The commercial was recorded in 2013, and the purpose was to demonstrate the benefits of the active steering of the Volvo Trucks FM range of trucks, especially in terms of its precision in maneuvering. In the video, the undisputed protagonist is the great Jean-Claude Van Damme, who runs one of his famous splits. A maneuver in which he spreads his legs, demonstrating his enormous flexibility and balance.
Van Damme is one of the most beloved action movie stars of the 1980s and 1990s.
But of course, instead of doing the split on solid ground, he does it on the rear-view mirrors of two trucks, which are reversing at the same speed. Little by little, one of the trucks moves away from the other, until Van Damme is completely suspended between both trucks. The precision of the entire team is absolute, and the ad was shot entirely without resorting to computer animation or any tricks. The video went viral and today accumulates 116 million views on YouTube.
It is always fascinating to contemplate this announcement, and you can do it on these lines.
