Since Dan O’Dowd started a campaign against Elon Musk around technology beta Full Self-Driving (FSD) of Tesla, fans and owners of the brand have been collecting videos to try to show the public how the technology actually works in the real world. So, in between videos, the AI DRIVR YouTube video, is one of many that has been testing FSD beta and making videos about it for some time now.
The system beta Tesla FSD he doesn’t really drive the car himself. Rather, you can drive the car in certain situations, but the driver must remain aware, alert and ready to take control at a moment’s notice. This is because there are many edge cases and the technology is not necessarily consistent. So while the videos are convincing, you can’t assume that the system will react the same way in every situation, and the video shows proof of that.
Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta avoids crashing into obstacles on the road
The video clearly shows that Tesla technology is capable of “seeing” obstacles and avoiding them. This is not new and many other cars on the market can do the same thing. It is also appreciated that the car with the technology activated sometimes cannot see obstacles and completely runs over them. It appears to have something to do with the size, shape, location, and movement (or lack of movement) of the object. The height of the obstacle also seems to have a significant impact on the activation of the system.
While it may be impressive to see that technology work as advertised in some cases, it doesn’t work as well in others. Perhaps even more worrying is how difficult it is to say exactly why it works so well when it works well, and why it fails so badly when something goes wrong. Fortunately, in general, it seems detect humans fairly well and bigger obstacles, but that doesn’t mean you can count on it to do it consistently in every situation.
