Spain: As of January 1, these public spaces will have to install an electric car charger

The Spanish government has the task of promoting electric Mobility, but for this it must address the lack of recharging infrastructure in the country.

In this context, the authority approved a Royal Decree which details the measures to promote said electric mobility. Perhaps the most relevant is the obligation to install charging points for EVs in certain public spaces. The measure comes into effect from January 1, 2023.

100,000 charging points in 2023

The regulations are not limited to the places where a recharging point must be installed, but also the quantity. It also affects the buildings of the General State Administration, for which the requirements without even more demanding.

The Government seeks to generate and expand a recharging network for electric vehicles to meet the needs of the population that, for now, does not trust the infrastructure. The objective is have 100,000 recharging points of different kinds in 2023.

Places where it is mandatory to install a charging point for electric cars

Public spaces such as supermarkets, hotels, shopping centers, public garages or work centers will have to install chargers.

Now, the measure applies if they have more than 20 parking spaces. The proportion will be one charger for every 40 seats. In case of exceeding 1000 seats, 100 recharging points will be required.

As for buildings public administrationit will be 1 charging point every 20 spaces for parking lots with more than 500 spaces.

Gas stations must also install charging points

Service stations must also do something similar, although not all of them, as the requirements are different.


  • Establishments that sell more than 10 million liters of gasoline and diesel per year: 1 recharging point with power equal to or greater than 150 kW.
  • Establishments that sell more than 5 million liters of gasoline and diesel per year: 1 recharging point with power equal to or greater than 50 kW.
  • Establishments with annual sales of less than 5 million liters of gasoline and diesel, but which lead the sales of the provinces, islands or autonomous cities in which they are located: 1 recharging point equal to or greater than 50 kW.
