Subaru Fuel Leak Recall: 70,000 Cars Affected

  • Subaru is recalling nearly 70,000 vehicles due to potential fuel leaks.
  • Rising ambient temperatures can cause fuel tank pressure to increase, forcing fuel up the filler neck and over the cap.
  • The fuel filler cap does not have an adequate seal.

Subaru is recalling 69,153 vehicles due to potential fuel leaks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “significant increases in ambient temperature” can increase fuel tank pressure, potentially causing fuel to leak from the filler cap and starting a fire when the tank is nearly full.

This recall impacts the 2025 Forester Hybrid and 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid. Subaru first learned of the potential problem late last year and began an investigation. The automaker was able to reproduce the problem, with fuel being forced up the filler neck, and discovered that an inadequate seal on the cap could cause a fuel leak.

Subaru said it is not aware of any injuries or fires related to this issue. Automakers will address this problem by replacing the cap with a new one that is equipped with an O-ring and features a better gasket. Until owners have their cars repaired, Subaru is advising them to limit their cars’ fuel levels to 50 percent and park outside.

According to recall reportthe company will begin notifying owners within the next 60 days.

Motorcycle Pickup1: This is Subaru’s first recall this year. While the impact of a fuel leak can be disastrous, at least it is a simple repair that owners can easily mitigate until they get it fixed.
