What is the EOBD?
EOBD is the abbreviation for European On-Board Diagnosticswhat is a system that allows to monitor and store the information of the sensors that are found throughout the car. If any sensor returns a value that is not within the acceptable range, it triggers a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
All gasoline-powered internal combustion cars sold in Europe since January 2001 and diesel-powered cars manufactured after 2003 must have on-board diagnostic systems to monitor engine emissions. The EOBD system was introduced with the European Directive 98/69/EC to monitor and reduce car emissions.
EOBD ports on cars
All cars should have a standard EOBD diagnostic socket that provides access to this system, like the one in the figure above. The connector is required EOBD is located inside the passenger compartment of the carwithin reach of the driver’s seat.
The connector should be easy but may have a removable cover over it. The connector has 16 pins and each manufacturer has a specific combination of pins. Within the standard we can find 5 pinout combinations and each combination has a specific communications protocol:
- J1850 VPW 2, 4, 5, 16 and other than 10
- ISO9141-2 4, 5, 7, 15 and 16
- J1850 PWM 2, 4, 5, 10 and 16
- KWP2000 (ISO 14230) 4, 5, 7, 15 and 16
- CAN-BUS 4, 5, 6, 14 and 16
What is the difference between OBD2 and EOBD?
The The only difference is an EOBD system is that it is made for cars sold in Europe.. For its part, OBD2 is designed for cars and light trucks that are purchased in the American market. With a OBD2 or EOBD system, you have access to almost the same functions diagnosis.
But also an EOB2 system can give warning to the driver of a car, that there is a fault that can cause the emission levels to exceed those allowed by European regulations.
