Dragon It is one of the most iconic highways in the United States, but on this side of the pond it is relatively unknown. We think of the United States as a country whose roads are slightly twisty, prepared for very wide vehicles and, in general, very different from European ones. The stereotype is partly true, but The Dragon is the exception that confirms it. In a section of just 18 kilometers it presents 318 curves. In fact, it is considered the best road in the country to enjoy a “tramero” car. But it is also considered extremely dangerous.
This highway is on the border between the states of Tennessee and North Carolina, and is technically called US 129. It runs almost entirely through a forest, following the winding course of a river. The driver Scott Speed, in collaboration with Subaru Motorsports USA, has been able to roll through The Dragon with the road closed. the vehicle is an atomic Subaru WRX STI, with a power of more than 600 hpcompletely lightened and with a set-up as suitable for a stage as for a rallycross circuit.
Pikes Peak seems like child’s play compared to the more technical sections of The Dragon.
The result is an exciting video, with spectacular shots recorded with an FPV drone – a first-person aerial camera – in which not only scenes of the car plying the road at full speed are shown, but also its sections are described. It’s a stretch that could easily pass through a European mountain road, and it goes straight to my list of areas to visit when I return to the United States. Especially on an autumn day. If you’re only going to watch one car video today, make it this one.
