When a new car leaves the dealership, according to Carfax, it loses 10% of its value: after its first year of life, it will have lost another 10%. Vehicles depreciate quickly, but some hold the test of time better than others. ISeeCars, a website specializing in used models, has analyzed this time factor to reveal which cars lose less value.

Explain the study that disruptions in manufacturers’ supply chains, They have not only influenced the price of new and used vehicles, but also their depreciation. To reach this conclusion, they have studied more than three million second-hand cars that, in 2022, were three and five years old: the latter only lost 33.3% of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP, for its acronym in English).

If we compare it with 2021, that percentage has been reduced by 17 points due to the slowdown in depreciation. And to this we must also add the revaluation of certain models due to the lack of new units.

The cars that lose less value in 5 years

The list of the study signed by ISeeCars is headed by Jeep Wrangler (7.3% – 1st) and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (8.7% – 2nd), that occupy the first two places in the list of vehicles with the lowest depreciation in five years: it is four times less than the average.

Sports models like the Porsche 911 (14.6% – 3rd), the Subaru BRZ (18.2% – 6th), the Ford Mustang (19.4% – 7th) and the Chevrolet Camaro (20.2% – 10th), which is not for sale in our country, saw how it skyrocketed their demand during the pandemic because drivers saw them as a way of having fun and disconnecting during the different confinements.

The other models on the list are some of the most popular and sold: Toyota Corolla (19.8% – 8th), Nissan Versa (19.9% ​​- 9th; not sold in our country), Honda Civic (16.3% – 5th) and Toyota Tacoma (14.9% – 4th; It is not sold in our country). The first three are compact, while the fourth is a midsize pick-up with renowned durability.

So that, sticking to our market, the models that lose less value are the Jeep Wrangler, the Porsche 911, the Honda Civic, the Ford Mustang and the Toyota Corolla: one 4×4, two compacts and two sports cars

The cars that have appreciated the most

ISeeCars has also analyzed the depreciation of the models with three years of life: in 2022 it is, on average, 16.9%; a percentage that represents a third less than the average of 2021 when it was 23.8%.

To this we must add that some models in its ranking came to be revalued for put your price above your MSRP. The reason? If drivers cannot buy a new car, the next level will be those with few kilometers: so much so that some of them cost the same as a brand new unit. Three examples of this are the Porsche 911 (+5.7%), the Jeep Wrangler (+0.3%) and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (+2.0%). They are the same ones that occupy the first three positions of the list with the models that have the lowest depreciation in five years.

The cars that have depreciated the most

ISeeCars explains that it is about vehicles belonging to luxury brands and large cars: In the case of the former, the buyer does not value their premium features as much and in the latter their high fuel consumption weighs, especially now.
