In recent years, the presence of electric scooters and other Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) have modified, along with other factors, the mobility of cities: not in vain, according to the General Directorate of Traffic, there is more a million VMP circulating every day. Not all of them are designed to transport people: those dedicated to merchandise also have their own space and the DGT remembers how they should be if you are going to transport something in them.

It should be remembered that, as of January 22, 2024, all electric scooters will have to be certificates. And for this, they will have to comply with the provisions of the ‘Personal Mobility Vehicle Characteristics Manual’: a regulatory document that includes the technical characteristics that must be met as of that date. Until then it will be possible to circulate even if it is not available.

What should an electric scooter for professionals be like?

Until now, we have told you about the scooters that are used for individual movement because they are the majority. However, the intended for the transport of goods They must also meet a series of requirements and conditions in order to have the necessary official certificate. Regarding traffic regulations, things do not change, but the characteristics of these scooters are different.

These Personal Mobility Vehicles can measure a maximum of 2 meters long, 1.8 meters high and 1 meter wide: They admit a maximum mass of 400 kilos, including the driver and the load. Under no circumstances can they be used to transport people.

They have at least three wheels: two of them have to be on the axis closest to the load because it is where the compartment to transport the goods is located. It has to be anchored to the chassis and display the maximum payload it can carry; if it is mobile, the surface on which the drawer rests must be non-slip and equipped with a correctly sized fixing system. In no case may it interfere with the visibility or maneuverability of the VMP.

Regarding their particular characteristics, these electric scooters must have a pair of L-class mirrors and a usable area of ​​at least 75 square centimeters. They have to be equipped with two independent brakes and, in this particular case, the driver has to have a separate actuator for each axis. As it has more than two wheels, it has to have a parking brake, although the stabilization system that activates when they are parked is not necessary.

Regarding the lighting and signaling system, VMPs intended for the transport of goods must have yellow side reflectors and red rear reflectors, which will be located on the edges and vertices of the load: thus they will be able to indicate both its height and its width. Secondly, are required to equip front and rear turn signals: the height of the first ones can be, at most, that of the scooter and that of the rear ones must be, at least, 1.5 meters.

And, finally, they must have an acoustic warning and include, specifically, an operating mode reverse, too, with a beep.
