Let’s face it. Car enthusiasts worldwide love the fourth generation Toyota Supra A80. Even after three years with today’s A90 Supra, people are still holding onto that 1990s icon on a pedestal that nothing seems to be able to cope with other than the modern A80 packing a 2JZ under the hood. Meanwhile, the third-generation A70 Supra has languished in the shadows, robbed of the love it deserves. Maybe this rendering can help change that.
We have Hakosan Designs on Instagram to thank you for this incredible vision of the new Supra wedge. The car is instantly recognizable as the A70 thanks to its long, flat hood, pop-up headlights, and simple fastback shape. This fictional enhancement rounds out some of the edges while respecting the classic wedge shape, keeping it low and wide. In fact, this interpretation is even wider thanks to the flared fenders, underneath which are fat tires and improved brakes.

The A70’s iconic black stripe is retained at the front, combining modern headlights with an aggressive lower fascia and a simple grille to feed and cool the engine. By the way, Hakosan Designs really lives up to the love of the A70 and A80, imagining this 1980s restomod using a 2JZ, 1JZ, or even a modified 3S four-cylinder engine that produces 500 hp. The 3S-GTE is known for powering the tallest fourth-generation Celica of the late 1980s, but lest we forget, the Supra came to life as a Celica trim level.
In fact, the A70 marks the official farewell between the Celica and the Supra. It debuted in 1986 looking like something from the future, and while American sports cars are returning to V8 engines, Toyota offers a competitive 3.0-liter inline-six that’s good for around 200 horsepower. A six-pot range was available over the years, culminating with the twin-turbocharged 2.5-liter 1JZ producing 276 hp for the Japanese market. In the United States, the top-range Supra features a single-turbo 3.0-liter engine that produces 232 hp.
No doubt the fourth-generation Supra with the 330-hp 2JZ outperforms its predecessor in almost every way. Claiming a prominent place in Fast and furious certainly helped him achieve superstar status, but it’s always nice to see the love given to the A70.
