Tesla will recall 1,096,762 2017-2022 Model 3, 2021-2022 Model S, 2021-2022 Model X, and 2020-2022 Model Y. The vehicle does not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) because the automatic power windows can clamp down on the passenger if part of a person gets in the way.
Tesla discovered this issue during production testing from August 19 to August 23, 2022. Engineers found that the automatic power window reversal system had “greater-than-expected variation in response to pinch detection,” according to documentation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

From September 5 to September 11, engineers began specifically testing this problem by examining the company’s models. They found that pinch detection and retraction performance did not match the requirements of FMVSS. There are no reports of injuries from this issue.
The solution is simply to change the firmware to make windows behave appropriately. As of September 13, newly produced vehicles have a software update. Tesla is sending out an over-the-air update to fix the affected models that are already on the road.
Tesla has recalled its vehicles several times this year. In May, the company needed to repair 130,000 units of the Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y because infotainment system processor may overheat during fast charging, causes the display to be slow or blank. The over-the-air update fixed this issue.
Also in May, the company recalled 48,184 Model 3 Performance vehicles due to the speedometer may have an incorrect display when the car is in Track Mode. Software update solved the problem.
There have also been two recalls regarding Tesla’s Boombox feature. It first is in February to disable the system, unless the vehicle is in the Park. Technicians use external speakers to play music or sound, and this can obscure the tone of the Pedestrian Warning System. Second Boombox Withdraw disables the system when the vehicle is in Call mode. Both only require a software update to make the vehicle compliant.
