The first units of the Toyota GR Corolla will be sold by lottery

The recipe for the Toyota GR Yaris improved and applied to a more practical and versatile body: the Toyota GR Corolla has all the ingredients to become the new fashionable sports compact… although in Europe we are condemned to witness it from a distance. If it’s any consolation, not everyone will be able to enjoy this creation: to access the Toyota GR Corolla, the first units have to choose you.

At the time, Toyota announced that it would manufacture, for the whole world, 8,600 units of the Toyota GR Corolla during its first Model Year: of these, 6,600 copies will go directly to the United States. And the remaining 2,000? Everything indicates that they will leave the production lines with right-hand drive and, therefore, they will end up in Japan and a few hundred other markets with this feature.

Toyota GR Corolla Lottery

The first batch of that production destined for Japan will be limited to 500 units and not everyone will be able to access them: buyers who want to have a Toyota GR Corolla in their private garage will have to submit a purchase request before December 19. The brand will hold a raffle with all of them and the winners of this particular lottery will be announced in January, as deliveries will begin in spring.

Why is Toyota doing this? The problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the shortage of semiconductors have forced it to limit production: at least initially. The company is aware that the Toyota GR Corolla will be in high demand in Japan and knows that it will not be able to fill all orders. In addition, the model is also sold in the United States… and this only adds more pressure on an already high demand.

Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition

They will adopt the same strategy with the Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition, a special edition that starts from the ‘Circuit Edition’ finish to conceive a version even more focused on circuits. For now, they will only make 70 units and applications must be submitted before December 18 in the GR Garage that are spread throughout the country: the lucky ones will be announced on January 6.

The Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition owes its name to the nickname of Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota. It is equipped with the same engine (the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder), which maintains its 305 HP of power, although its maximum torque increases from 370 to 400 Nm. His dance partner is still a six-speed manual gearbox, although this time the relationships are shorter.
