The best-selling BMW M of 2022 is none of the ones you were expecting

The celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of BMW M GmbH were accompanied by the debuts of several new models. The innovations ranged from the second generation of the BMW M2, with its six-cylinder engine, six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, to the 653-hp BMW XM, including the first BMW M3 Touring with which they sought new ways of experiencing the features features of the line.

Timo Resch, BMW M Customer, Brand and Sales Director, answers this question: “The best-selling BMW M car of 2022 is the BMW i4 M50.” A fully electric model that changes the script hitherto known: “For us, this is a clear sign that the sensations of M has reached the world of electrified vehicles.” It also marks the start of the division in the era of electric mobility.

It should be remembered that the BMW i4 M50 is powered by two electric motors: one located on the front axle and the other on the rear. Together they generate a maximum power of 544 CV: This force, coming from this dual configuration, together with the independent adjustment of the suspension, ensures that this zero emissions car can offer the typical driving experience expected of an M model.

M’s plans for 2023

On the BMW M roadmap for 2023 continues the electric offensive with the BMW XM and the BMW i7 M70, an M based on the electric BMW i7. Updates to the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M models will arrive next spring.

And in order to be able to continue to include electric vehicles in the future of the most high-performance Bavarian division, BMW M GmbH will intensify its proof of concept: the aim is to shape an integrated driving dynamics control system and an M xDrive electric four-wheel drive system with four electric motors.
