It’s been almost two years since Renault dropped the bombshell. The Renault 5 returns as a kind of utility with a retro look, which will recover the aesthetics of the classic to become an electric urban car, for all audiences, with an attractive design. As if that were not enough, Renault will take advantage of that same platform to launch a second crossover-style electric utility vehicle, which will mark the return of the Renault 4.
But that’s just the beginning. Alpine also has ambitious and important plans throughout this decade. Plans that necessarily go through the electric vehicle and that should also be very closely related to the Renault 5.
What can we expect from the future Alpine A290?
Alpine A290, an electric Renault 5 Turbo?
Alpine already has a trademark that could point directly to their next big release, an Alpine A290 that would join the Alpine A110 which, as we can already tell you, will not only continue to be marketed in the coming years but will also have a successor, which will be completely electric. After recovering the name Alpine A110, used in the classic sports car of the sixties and seventies, Alpine could bet on maintaining this nomenclature in a range that will grow significantly in the next five years.
Alpine’s next big launch will be in 2024. The only thing Alpine has confirmed right now is that it will be a fully electric B-segment sports compact. The future Alpine A290, which will arrive in 2024, should be a sporty and radical version of the Renault 5. And some of the keys to its design and its technical characteristics should have already been revealed with the Renault 5 prototype presented in 2021 and, to a lesser extent, with the R5 Turbo 3E prototype presented just a few weeks ago at the Paris Motor Show. which is the same one that illustrates this entry.
The generational change of the Alpine A110 is scheduled for 2026.
From the return of the Renault 5 to sports crossovers
Alpine wants to be more than just a sports car brand. It wants to reach volume segments, offer more practical products and, above all, satisfy the needs of a clientele that will bet on high-end electric cars and which Renault would not reach. So he has laid out a plan to launch three electric crossovers following this roadmap:
- An electric GT crossover will arrive in the C segment in 2025
- In 2027 an electric GT crossover from the D segment
- In 2028 an electric GT crossover from the E segment
So Alpine’s objective is to close this decade with a catalog that will include a high-flying electric sports car, which replaces the current A110; a sports electric compact, which would predictably be the sports version of the Renault 5; and three electric crossovers from segments C, D and E.
